Camps for older youth ages 17-19

Youth aged 17-19 have different expectations for summer trips compared to younger children. This is a time when young people begin to shape their independence, make their first adult decisions, and seek experiences that will prepare them for the future. They are no longer satisfied with simple time management under the supervision of caregivers – they expect more freedom, flexibility, and opportunities to plan activities on their own. Camps for older youth should meet these needs by offering space to develop passions, acquire new skills, and build relationships with peers on more equal terms. This age is ideal for exploring new interests, taking on challenges, and gaining valuable experiences that can influence future educational and career choices. At the same time, 17- and 19-year-olds don't want to be treated like children – they don't need constant supervision but rather support and the opportunity to make decisions for themselves. Therefore, the key when choosing a camp is finding a balance between an engaging program, freedom, and the appropriate level of safety. What are the best options for them, and what should you consider when choosing the perfect camp? Let’s take a look!

What to consider when choosing a camp?

Program – The program should be tailored to the age and interests of the participants, but not overloaded.

Opportunity to earn certificates – for example, diving courses, sailing, jet ski license, etc.

Location – the sea, mountains, or maybe a city? It's worth choosing a location with attractions outside the camp program.

Age Groups - Youth camps usually divide participants into different age groups, which allows the program and activities to be adapted to the needs and expectations of the participants. Typical age groups at camps are:

Camps for children (7-12 years old) – Mainly focused on fun, emotional and social development, with high-quality supervision.

Camps for younger teens (13-14 years old) – At this age, participants begin seeking new challenges and more freedom. They expect a more intense program that combines education with fun.

Camps for older teens (15-17 years old) – At this stage, youth become increasingly independent. They expect camps that allow them to develop their passions, integrate with peers, and give them more freedom.

Camps for youth 18+ – These are often outbound camps, including language, volunteer, specialized, or work camps abroad.

Most offers for teen camps, however, focus on age groups 14+ (14-17 years old), as this age range sees the highest interest in camps that combine developmental activities with space for relaxation and integration. While many programs are aimed at younger participants, camps for 14-year-olds and older offer various options that cater to the needs of older teens, combining education, sports, creativity, and independence.
